About us

Sólskinsbúðin is a small farmers market and takeaway café on Iceland’s south coast, offering fresh vegetables, homemade food, and carefully selected local products.

We grow a variety of vegetables right here at our farm — including tomatoes, cucumbers, and seasonal greens. What we don’t grow ourselves, we source from nearby farms and producers who share our values. Our focus is on quality, freshness, and simplicity — we choose products with few additives and a strong connection to local traditions.

Alongside our own produce, you’ll find a selection of Icelandic pork and beef, dairy products, locally made candy, strawberries, and ice cream. We bake many of our cakes and treats in-house, and we also work with a small local bakery that supplies us with fresh bread and pastries.

For travelers looking for a good coffee stop, we serve high-quality specialty coffee roasted in the north of Iceland. While we don’t have indoor seating, most of what we offer is perfect for takeaway — whether you’re heading out for a picnic or just need a quick, tasty stop along your journey towards the Golden Circle.

Whether you're picking up ingredients for dinner, looking for a sweet treat, or simply curious about local Icelandic flavors, Sólskinsbúðin is a cozy and down-to-earth stop where you can enjoy the best of what the region has to offer.

Grown with Green Energy — All Year Round

At Sólskins, we’re proud to grow our vegetables all year round — even through the darkest Icelandic winter. Thanks to Iceland’s clean, renewable energy and access to naturally heated geothermal water (like the kind you’ll see in the local hot pools), our greenhouses stay warm and productive no matter the season.

We grow indoors at two locations: right here at Melar, where our shop is located, we grow a variety of crops in our 5,000 m² greenhouse. Our second greenhouse at Hverabakki, 4,000 m² in size, is just across from the Secret Lagoon — a beautiful and fitting neighbor, as it shares the same geothermal water source that helps us grow.

We water our plants with the same clean, fresh water we drink ourselves — straight from the Icelandic highlands — helping us grow high-quality produce in a sustainable way, without unnecessary chemicals or additives.
